Klitschko Defeats Gomez

Tonights WBC heavyweight championship fight between current WBC champion Vitali Klitschko and # 1 WBC contender Juan Carlos Gomez started off with Vitali feeling out his opponent and Gomez' speed giving Vitali some issues, but after awhile he adjusted and started to come on in the later rounds landing some good right crosses.

In round 5 Gomez got a cut over his right eye from a Klitshcko punch, and in round 6 Klitschko got a cut around the hairline from a headbutt by Gomez.

At the end of round 7 Gomez was hurt and went down with a strong right, but Klitschko could not finish him. In round 8 Vitali put more pressure on Gomez and hurt him and dominated, but Vitali was unable to follow up to finish him although the could have been waived off because at one point Gomez turned his back as Klitschko was punishing him.

In round 9, Vitali got warned for something I'm still not sure about and was deducted points(I believe it may have been what the ref saw as a headbutt? I didn't see it, and I'm not a 100% on whether he was deducted points but it looks like he was), and immediately after followed up with a barrage of punches and Gomez was hurt and he went down again. After he got up, Vitali pursued him again and hurt him until the ref called it off. So Vitali Klitschko remains the WBC heavyweight champion via 9th round TKO. The 9th round is what I predicted for the fight to end.

In my opinion, this was a very good fight with Gomez actually coming to fight and trade shots with Vitali. Gomez is really fast and I don't see too many other fighters other than the Klitschko's beating Gomez in the heavyweight division. I think Gomez would beat Haye, and Povetkin, but most likely lost to Dimitrenko and Arreola would be a toss up.

So Vitali improves his record to 37(35 KO's)-2(2 KO's)-0 while Gomez falls to 44(35 KO's)-2(2 KO's)-0. Vitali is scheduled to face another mandatory, Oleg Maskaev, in a very short time. Stay tuned for more information here.
